At Pentecost we celebrate the gift of the Holy Spirit to the first group of Christian believers - the disciples. This gift of the Holy Spirit is the culmination of the life, death and resurrection of Jesus.

The 15th of May marks the first anniversary of the canonisation of our brother Titus Brandsma, canonised along with nine other holy men and holy women, by Pope Francis in St Peter’s Square in 2022. The memory of that celebration and the days that surrounded it still live in the minds and hearts of thousands of people all around the world. It was particularly moving for all of us who had the blessing of being in Rome when the event was taking place.

A conference on Titus Brandsma will take place at Radboud University in Nijmegen, Netherlands on October 3-6, 2023. The program brings together scholars from various parts of the world who will present on the multi-faceted life and work of Brandsma. The number of participants is limited to 30, providing an opportunity for all to become involved in the discussions.

On Sunday 4 November the Carmelite Family gathered at St Elias Community in Hera for a Mass of Thanksgiving for Fr Bruce Clark. Fr Bruce is returning to Australia to take up his role as newly elected Prior Provincial after living in Timor-Leste for the last 10 years. During that time, he has served as Novice Master, Prior, Director of Formation and the Provincial’s representative in Timor-Leste. A large crowd of Friars, sisters and members of the Carmelite Family gathered to mark the occasion and express their gratitude for Fr Bruce’s presence and ministry in Timor-Leste.

Pope Francis will consecrate humanity, Russia and Ukraine to the Immaculate Heart of Mary during the usual Friday Lenten Penitential service at St Peter’s tomorrow, the feast of the Annunciation of the Lord. The Pope has invited the whole Church to join with him and to pray the Act of Consecration throughout the day.

“This Act of Consecration is meant to be a gesture of the universal Church, which in this dramatic moment lifts up to God, through His Mother and ours, the cry of pain of all those who suffer and implore an end to the violence, and to entrust the future of our human family to the Queen of Peace,” the Pope said.

On the 9 days before the Feast of Our Lady of Mount Carmel (16 July), we pray for the needs of our Carmelite Family in Australia and Timor-Leste. Last year, in the midst of COVID-19, we included the people of the world in our novena of prayer. The novena can be prayed at any time of the year for the intentions below or for your own intentions asking Our Lady of Mount Carmel to intercede and pray with us. The prayers and intentions can be downloaded pdf here .

Carmelites and friends in the England, Brazil, Timor-Leste and Australia came together online to form a virtual choir to record the song, ‘God Be With You’ as a prayer for all during these times. The words are in English and Tetum. The recording was organised by Niko De Jesus whose brother, Estevão, is one of our young Carmelites in Timor-Leste and includes Australian Carmelite, Matthew Tonini. Watch the video.
