Fifteen years ago today the Australian Carmelites took responsibility for the Carmelite Mission in Timor-Leste.
The mission was founded in January 1999 by the Indonesian Carmelites. In August 1999 the Timorese people voted for self-determination. On 20 October the Indonesian legislature ratified the vote, allowing East Timor to officially be an independent nation.

Br Matthew Tonini was formally entrusted with the ministry of Lector by Fr Paul Cahill (Prior Provincial) on 15 July.
Lectors proclaim the Word of God in liturgical assemblies, instruct adults and children in the faith and prepare them to receive the sacraments.
For those preparing for Priesthood in the Church, receiving this ministry is another step on their journey to Ordination. Congratulations, Matthew!
On Thursday 14 July Brs Martinho Da Cruz Lemos and Albino Dos Santos renewed their Vows as Carmelites for another year.
The ceremony took place during Mass in the Carmelite Community, Middle Park. Fr Paul Cahill (Prior Provincial) received the renewal of vows.

Br Agedo Bento made his Solemn Profession of Vows (life commitment) on the Feast of Our Lady of Mount Carmel, July 16, during Mass at the National Shrine.
Fr Paul Cahill (Prior Provincial) led the celebration together with 13 other Carmelites. About 140 people attended including Lay Carmelites, members of the East Timorese Community, fellow-religious and parishioners of Port Melbourne/Middle Park Parish. 3 hymns during the mass were sung by Tetum by the East Timor Students' Association.
On 9 July our Deacons, Agostinho Exposto, Fausto Tilman De Araujo and Carlito Da Costa Araujo were ordained priests in Immaculate Conception Cathedral, Dili, Timor-Leste by Bishop Virgilio do Carmo da Silva, S.D.B., Bishop of Dili.
Fr Paul Cahill (Prior Provincial), on behalf of the Carmelites, formally presented the deacons to the Bishop for ordination. Also present were Australian and Timorese Carmelites and many Diocesan priests and religious. Click here for more photos.

Br Pedro Amaral was ordained Deacon yesterday at the Church of St Michael in Nita on the island of Flores (Indonesia). Bishop Geralfus Cherubim Parera SVD officiated at the ceremony.
Fr Aniceto Maia Da Costa represented Fr Paul Cahill (Prior Provincial) at the Ordination.
Our congratulations go to Pedro together with our prayers as he continues to prepare for his ordination to Priesthood.
