On Saturday, April 17, Br Matthew Tonini was ordained Priest and Br Agedo Bento ordained Deacon at the National Shrine of Our Lady of Mt Carmel, Middle Park (Vic) by Archbishop Peter A Comensoli, Archbishop of the Catholic Archdiocese of Melbourne.

Many people from all around Australia including members of the East Timor Community came to support Matthew and Agedo. 19 priests (Carmelite, other religious and diocesan) concelebrated Mass.

Fr Matthew was the first Carmelite to be ordained Priest in Australia since 2005. Congratulations, Matthew and Agedo!

Fr Matthew will return to Our Lady of Mount Carmel in Coorparoo, Brisbane, Queensland as Assistant Priest. Br Agedo is completing his Master of Teaching degree at Australian Catholic University (ACU) in Melbourne.

Carmelite Rule

A rule of life was given to the early Carmelites by St Albert Avogadro, Patriach of Jerusalem between the years 1206 - 1214. It was finally approved by Pope Innocent in 1247 and later underwent mitigations which were not in the original text.

The Carmelite Rule states that is basic for a Carmelite to "live a life of allegiance to Jesus Christ - how, pure in heart and stout in conscience, he must be unswerving in the service of his Master" [no.2].
