Whitefriars College students are taking a stance in preventing violence against women.
Each year on White Ribbon Day people are encouraged to wear a white ribbon and paint one fingernail white as a symbol of their oath never to commit, excuse or remain silent about violence against women.
It is sobering to think that, on average, one woman dies each week as the result of male inflicted domestic violence. Beyond that figure lies significant numbers of women and children who live in fear.
Our College leaders have taken up the issue through the posting of a video that demonstrates their attitude to this prominent social problem. Our boys believe that young men and men need to speak up and be heard on this issue.
A lunchtime event for students was held on Monday 27 November. Student leaders encourag conversation and raise awareness of the unacceptability of domestic violence against women and are asking students to speak out for the women they love.
Students were encouraged to purchase White Ribbons, sign their name on a banner to symbolise their oath and paint a finger nail white to spread awareness of the cause, making a personal commitment to “stand up, speak out and act” against violence against women.
