PNG Brisbane and Gold coast Catholic Community marked the 51st anniversary of independence with mass at Nudgee College, Brisbane, on 6 September. Students from Nudgee College (boys) and Stuartholme College (girls) joined in the celebrations. Carmelite, Fr Paul Sireh (Chaplain, PNG community in the Brisbane Archdiocese) was the celebrant, together with Fr Tony Simbel CP.
Students, staff and the PNG community provided music, dance, readings as well as food and drink for the celebration after mass.
Australia governed PNG from the end of World War II until PNG was granted full independence on 16 September 1975.
