From Carmelites to Mercy Partners

Ever since the establishment of Whitefriars in 1961 the Carmelites have always wanted to ensure the continuing growth and development of the college. That growth and development has been fostered by Carmelite principals and, more recently, by a Board appointed by the Carmelite Provincial Council.

Aware of their diminishing capacity to provide the Canonical and civil oversight required for the for the College to continue to flourish, the Carmelites decided at their Provincial Chapter in 2022 to transfer these responsibilities to Mercy Partners which provides Canonical governance for a range of Catholic ministries. The College Board will continue to look after the day-to-day operations of the College.

The liturgy accompanying the handover ceremony on 18 April highlighted the rich spiritual tradition and heritage of the Carmelites and Whitefriars College.

The official documents were signed by Carmelites, Frs Bruce Clark (Prior Provincial) and Paul Cahill (Canonical Representative), and Mr Kieran McCarthy (Deputy Chair of Mercy Partners).
