Loss & grief in times of disaster

Grief is an emotional response when we lose someone or something we love.

The people of Zumalai, Timor-Leste, are struggling with the loss of homes, the few cherished possessions they had, their farms and their livelihoods as a result of recent floods. Your support has been vital in helping the Carmelites provide food, cooking utensils, seeds and household goods to those affected.

“Where disaster occurs or a need is identified, our Carmelite family springs into action with generosity. Your support is giving families food to eat, supplies to affected communities to rebuild houses and infrastructure, and more children the chance to pursue an education,” says Fr Bruce Clark (Prior Provincial) in the latest issue of Carmel Contact.

Carmelite Rule

A rule of life was given to the early Carmelites by St Albert Avogadro, Patriach of Jerusalem between the years 1206 - 1214. It was finally approved by Pope Innocent in 1247 and later underwent mitigations which were not in the original text.

The Carmelite Rule states that is basic for a Carmelite to "live a life of allegiance to Jesus Christ - how, pure in heart and stout in conscience, he must be unswerving in the service of his Master" [no.2].
