Fr Amandio celebrates Mass of Thanksgiving

Fr Amandio Soares Salsinha celebrated a Mass of Thanksgiving in his home parish of Railaco last Sunday, 23 September. Joined by Carmelites, parishioners, family and friends, the Mass was celebrated outdoors to accommodate the large crowd. The ceremony began with a traditional welcome during which Amandio was clothed in traditional dress and then escorted to the Church with Fr Narcizio Da Costa Vilanova who had been ordained with Amandio on 2 September. Br Silvestre Alves was Deacon at the Mass.

Among the Carmelites present were Frs Bruce Clark (Prior Provincial), Carlito Da Costa Araújo (Provincial Delegate), Aniceto Maia Da Costa, Fausto Tilman De Araújo and Roque Soares Da Cruz.

Carmelite Rule

A rule of life was given to the early Carmelites by St Albert Avogadro, Patriach of Jerusalem between the years 1206 - 1214. It was finally approved by Pope Innocent in 1247 and later underwent mitigations which were not in the original text.

The Carmelite Rule states that is basic for a Carmelite to "live a life of allegiance to Jesus Christ - how, pure in heart and stout in conscience, he must be unswerving in the service of his Master" [no.2].
