Carmelites gather at World Youth Day

Carmelites taking part in World Youth Day gathered together in Lisbon for a day of fraternity, prayer and catechesis led by Fr Míceál O’Neill, Prior General. Among those present were Br Agostinho Dos Santos and Carmelite Youth (JUCAR) from Timor-Leste as well as Fr Matthew Tonini from Australia.

The Prior General spoke to the group around the theme of Mary who arose in haste (the theme of world youth day) and the role of the prophet who in our ancient texts is defined as ‘a singer of psalms’.

Like Mary, who sings the Magnificat, and Sts Nuno, and Titus, we are called to sing the song of the God who is found in the seemingly ordinary, the gifts and graves of friends and family, work and prayer.

During the day there were sharing groups, singing and celebration, meeting across countries, lunch, presentations and Eucharist.

Carmelite Rule

A rule of life was given to the early Carmelites by St Albert Avogadro, Patriach of Jerusalem between the years 1206 - 1214. It was finally approved by Pope Innocent in 1247 and later underwent mitigations which were not in the original text.

The Carmelite Rule states that is basic for a Carmelite to "live a life of allegiance to Jesus Christ - how, pure in heart and stout in conscience, he must be unswerving in the service of his Master" [no.2].
