5 make Solemn Vows in Timor-Leste

On 14 June Brs Frangelino Isaias Ximenes, Julião Dos Santos, David Soares, Estevão De Deus Gomes and Francisco Xavier Martins make their profession of Solemn Vows (life-long commitment) in the Carmelites in a ceremony attended by some 2,000 people.

The Mass of Solemn Profession took place in the Carmelite Community at Hera, Timor-Leste. Fr Bruce Clark (Prior Provincial) presided and was joined by over 30 priests and 6 deacons.

It was a great collaboration of the Carmelite Family with the Hermanas Carmelitas (Carmelite Sisters) in large numbers, with our neighbours the O.Carm sisters and many Lay Carmelites as well as JUCAR (Carmelite Youth) and NIKAR (Carmelite Children) as well as family members, friends and neighbours, who worked together to prepare the place, the decorations and the food for the lunch that followed the mass. See photos below.

Congratulations to all involved and especially to our 5 brothers.

Carmelite Rule

A rule of life was given to the early Carmelites by St Albert Avogadro, Patriach of Jerusalem between the years 1206 - 1214. It was finally approved by Pope Innocent in 1247 and later underwent mitigations which were not in the original text.

The Carmelite Rule states that is basic for a Carmelite to "live a life of allegiance to Jesus Christ - how, pure in heart and stout in conscience, he must be unswerving in the service of his Master" [no.2].
