New Timor-Leste Council

The Carmelites in Timor have elected Fr Roque Soares Da Cruz and Br Carlito Da Silva as members of the new Timor-Leste Council. They will work with Fr Carlito Da Costa Araújo, the newly appointed Provincial Delegate for Timor-Leste, to foster the growth and development of Carmelite life in Timor. They also exercise a ministry of pastoral care for the Carmelites in Timor and manage the day-to-day affairs of the Order there.

The election of the new Council was held during an assembly of Carmelites in Timor from 23-25 March which had the theme: Community is Life-Giving. Fr Bruce Clark (Prior Provincial) attended the assembly as did our Community Development Coordinator, Mayra Walsh and Province Business Manager, Joe Konynenburg.

Our congratulations, prayers and best wishes are with the new Council as it takes up its ministry.

Carmelite Rule

A rule of life was given to the early Carmelites by St Albert Avogadro, Patriach of Jerusalem between the years 1206 - 1214. It was finally approved by Pope Innocent in 1247 and later underwent mitigations which were not in the original text.

The Carmelite Rule states that is basic for a Carmelite to "live a life of allegiance to Jesus Christ - how, pure in heart and stout in conscience, he must be unswerving in the service of his Master" [no.2].

Safeguarding

The Carmelites of Australia and Timor-Leste are committed to the protection of children, young people and vulnerable adults from all forms of abuse and mistreatment.
