During a special ceremony at the Vatican on 27 August Pope Francis officially appointed 20 new Cardinals, placing the red biretta on them, giving them their ring, and assigning them their title and rank. Among the new Cardinals is Archbishop Virgilio do Carmo da Silva, Archbishop of Dili, Timor-Leste.

In an interview with Vatican News, the new Cardinal said, 'During the night (when I received the news), the feeling of unworthiness was disturbing me, all night long, until I woke up for the morning Mass. In my struggles to accept the “will of God,” I came to realize that this is a gift God made through the Holy Father, for the people and Church of East Timor.
